Every child in America has a right to food, shelter, health care and a good education.
This is what I’ve always believed. It is what I believe today. It is a goal to live by.
No matter what you say about a child’s parents, no child deserves to suffer for their parent’s shortcomings or circumstances.
To be honest, I don’t know how to achieve the goal, at least in the America we live in.
And to be doubly honest, I don’t much care how we achieve the goal. What is important is that we work together towards accomplishing the goal.
Typically, liberals/progressives (often Democrats) push higher taxes and government programs to deliver good. By contrast, typically conservatives (often Republicans) push reduced spending, tax credits and incentives to deliver good.
Myself, I care about delivering good, not about how we get there. As an Independent, I will work with everyone to do my best to look out for our children.
For sure, there’s problems with both liberal and conservative approaches (big government programs lead to bureaucracy and waste; adjusting the tax code leaves holes in the safety net). No approach is perfect, but the goal of food, shelter, health care and a good education for every child in America is worth reaching nonetheless.
Here’s the tough part: America has a ballooning national debt, so if you want to propose something that costs money, I believe you should pay for it. I may not have all the answers on how to pay for the goal of every child having food, shelter, health care and a good education, but I’ve got a start. My start: End the step-up basis for estate assets at time of death for all estates above $100 million, taxing the excess as capital gains. I got this tax approach from conservative Republican Mitt Romney, once the Republican nominee for President, who wrote in The New York Times this past December about how the “cavern” of advantage for the superrich makes no sense. If the tax on bases above $100 million is good for Mitt Romney, then it’s good for me and hopefully good for everyone in our Congressional district.
